Sometimes green is great, but it’s not when it’s taking over your once beautiful wooden deck. Trust us… been there. If your wood is going from its original color to a greener one, that’s often a sign of algae growth.
That doesn’t mean the problem can’t be solved. As local, Kansas City deck builders, York Companies has seen a lot of algae growth. However, we have a few steps to learn how to remove algae from your wood deck.
First things first, you’re going to want to clean your deck. Yes, that means removing all furniture, equipment—anything that’s on your deck. From there, sweep away dirt, leaves and other debris. If you’re short on time, you can always use a leaf blower.
Next you’ll want to wash your deck with an oxygenated cleanser. You can typically find them at your local hardware store. Keep in mind that you’ll want to find a cleanser that also gets rid of algae. Start off by hosing down your deck (this is very important). Once your deck is wet, use a bucket to mix your cleanser. Make sure you accurately measure and use the right water-to-cleaner ratio. This isn’t something you want to eyeball.
You can wash your deck using a deck brush or a sprayer, whichever you prefer. Either way, take your time and don’t try to rush through the process. When you’re done keep the cleanser on for 15 to 30 minutes before rising or power spraying.
